Getting Started with QuitWorks

QuitWorks can be used by providers in many settings - office practices, hospitals, clinics, community health centers, and community-based programs. QuitWorks is geared for general practitioners, as well as medical specialists such as pediatricians.

Here are the three easy steps to get started. You will find more information in Guides for Providers. A QuitWorks team from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the University of Massachusetts Medical School will help customize the program for hospitals and health centers.

Step 1.
Identify smokers. Set up a system to identify and document tobacco use by patients. See the QuitWorks Implementation Guidefor more information on how to identify smokers.

Step 2. Talk with patients about tobacco use during an office visit, a hospital stay or outpatient visit. Learn more about how to motivate smokers to make a quit attempt.

Prescribe pharmacotherapy, if appropriate, for relief of withdrawal symptoms and to aid with stopping smoking. Use the Pharmacotherapy Guide to help you decide which medications are available.

Step 3. Complete the enrollment form and fax it to QuitWorks at 1-866-560-9113.

QuitWorks takes it from there

When your fax is received at the Massachusetts Smokers’ Helpline, our QuitWorks counselors will call your patient within three days to complete a 15-minute intake and assessment. QuitWorks will offer your patient a medical screening for nicotine patches, if applicable, up to five telephone based-counseling sessions, and other services.

QuitWorks will send status reports on our contact with your patient within a few weeks, and a report on their quit status at six months.
