MassHealth Tobacco Cessation Benefit

Effective July 1st, 2006, Medicaid recipients in Massachusetts have access to all FDA-approved smoking cessation medications and counseling support.

The Massachusetts Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Program and MassHealth have developed tools to help providers and their patients to understand and use the benefit.

Because the new benefit includes reimbursement for a 45-minute provider intake and assessment session with tobacco users, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Center for Tobacco Prevention and Control has also developed an Intake and Assessment Questionnaire and a guide for clinicians in its use.

Tools for Providers
Tools for providers include a one-page overview of the new benefit; a four-page Frequently Asked Questions document, a pocket dosing guide for pharmacotherapy, and a one-page handout for patients on MassHealth.
