Provider Training
We know what works when it comes to helping smokers to quit.In 2000, synthesizing the evidence from a review of more than 6,000 research articles, the US Public Health Service published a Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. The Guidelines recommend specific elements to increase quit rates among smokers: a system to identify smokers, clinician brief interventions, FDA-approved medications, and behavioral counseling.
The University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) is a leader nationally in tobacco dependency treatment research and training for clinicians. UMass offers a wide range of continuing education (CEU) and skills training programs to help Massachusetts clinicians to intervene successfully with smokers.
In this section learn more about the effective ways to work with smokers.
