Tobacco-Free School Policy

One aspect of the multifaceted approach to smoking prevention is the support and enforcement of laws and policies that prohibit tobacco in schools. We have provided you with applicable laws, information on how to adopt and communicate these laws and policies, penalty options, and sample policies that schools can utilize to create a tobacco-free environment. Guidelines and Assessments
Use these guidelines and assessment tools to evaluate your school's health program and to compliment our recommended policy strategies.

Guidelines for School Health Programs to Prevent Tobacco Use and Addiction- CDC identifies strategies for school health programs that are most likely to be effective in preventing tobacco use and addiction among young people.

Fit, Healthy and Ready to Learn: A School Health Policy Guide- National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) policy guide reflects the concerns and priorities of education policymakers and administrators, addressing broad policy issues and focusing on physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco use prevention.

School Health Assessment- A self-assessment and planning tool developed by the CDC that schools can use to improve their health and safety.

HE-CAT: Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool- An assessment tool developed by the CSC to assist in conducting a clear, complete, and consistent analysis of health education curricula based on National Health Education Standards and CDC's Characteristics of Effective Health Education Curricula.

CDC School Health Index – A self-assessment and planning tool that schools can use to improve their health and safety policies and programs. It's easy to use and completely confidential.
 
MDPH Comprehensive School Health Manual- Includes material on addictions to tobacco and other substances.
